Abstract/Contents:A trial was made of the wear tolerance, under studded roller treatment, of a Lolium perenne and Poa pratensis sward receiving annual N dressings of 20, 30, 40 or 50 g/m2. The trial was made on a turf area constructed with a drainage layer of gravelly sand and a root zone without topsoil. With year-round wear the critical N level was 20-30 g/m2 each year. Higher N levels greatly diminished the sward ground cover; impaired the sward composition by increasing the proportion of invading Poa annua; greatly reduced the root mass; and caused deterioration in the mechanical properties of the sward such as shear strength and leaf tensile strength. Higher amounts of N also increased the moisture content and N content in the vegetation cover of the sward (mainly thatch), but reduced total cell-wall constituents. Among the latter, the hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin levels increased with N, but the ash (including SiO2) was reduced, sometimes very considerably.
