Abstract/Contents:1983 update of 3 tests to evaluate the long-term quality of improved perennial ryegrass cultivars and evaluate their competiveness with Kentucky bluegrass in a Kentucky location. Test 1 (established fall 1976) includes three replications of 13 varieties, seeded at four pounds/1,000 sq ft. Three pounds of Nitrogen/1,000 sq ft., are applied annually during fall and early winter. Since 1977, mowing height has been 1 inch. A table provides 1977-83 annual and 7-year average visual quality ratings (1 to 9;9=best quality) with significant differences indicated (SD) for 1983. 7-year average ratings ranged from 3.8(NK 100) to 6.1(Derby). Test 2 evaluates seeding rates of Manhattan perennial ryegrass (1.2. or 4 #/1,000 sq ft.) and Manhattan: Adelphi Kentucky bluegrass mixtures at 10:90, 20:80, or 50:50 (% by weight, all at 2#/1,000 sq. ft.). A table provides 1977-83 annual and 7-year average visual quality ratings with SD indicated for 1983. Ratings were not significantly different among treatments in 1983 but 7-year average ratings are slightly higher in mixtures than in Manhattan alone. Test 3, established 9/82, and part of the National Perennial Ryegrass Test, includes three replications of 48 named and experimental cultivars. The seeding rate was 5.5 pounds/1,000 sq. ft. Three pounds of Nitrogen/1,000 sq. ft. was applied during October and December. Mowing height was 1.5 inches. A table provides 1983 April-November monthly and yearly average visual quality ratings, % brown patch (rated on 7/22/83) and color ratings (average of 10/18/83 and 11/22/83 ratings; 1-3;3=darkest green). SD are indicated for 1983 average quality and color ratings. Prelude had overall best performance and Linn had worst.
