| Abstract/Contents: | Turf established on (a) topsoil, (b) a mixture of lava sand and peat over subsoil, and (c) a mixture of sand, peat and 10% by volume of topsoil on a drainage layer of sand was treated with NPK fertilizer [composition not stated] at 2 rates and with the N in slow-release or soluble form. The highest loss of nutrients through leaching occurred with N and K2O whereas P2O5 hardly moved. Considered seasonally, there was most leaching of nutrients when field capacity was first achieved in autumn. With N, the loss through leaching was greater in the more permeable turf media and in those with added topsoil. A slow-acting N fertilizer led to rather greater N losses than did a quick-acting one. Losses through leaching were also greater when more fertilizer was applied. Considerable losses of K2O were attributable to the use of lava sand, whose high K2O content was not suspected when the trial was laid down. During the trial period the contents of P2O5 increased in sandy root zones, but the N especially in topsoil, decreased. |
