Abstract/Contents: | Reports that the Park District of Highland Park has lifted a ban allowing grounds keepers to use chemical pesticides and herbicides on playing fields. States the district was "praised as a model...leading a natural lawn-care movement," citing instensified irrigation, aeration and over-seeding as environmentally responsible cultural practices. Details an August 18, 2011 report that the field conditions were the worst in over a decade, with an invasion of dandelions, clover and other invasive weeds, metioning that "the issue has recently become one of the district's most significant sources of complaints." Cites Director of Park Operations, Ted Baker, as saying "the district is at a point where chemicals are needed to complement (Integrated Pest Management)", but "we aren't abandoning it." |
