Abstract/Contents:Presents information regarding the endophytic fungi, neotyphodium that lives symbiotically, feeding off grasses while providing the grass protection from insects such as black cutworm. States that neotyphodium can be toxic to livestock, so those alkaloid profiles were eliminated, meanwhile increasingly calling their susceptibility to insects into question. Details how Assistant Professor of Turfgrass Entomology at Purdue, Douglas Richmond, worked with other researchers to "assemble a series of Neotyphodium endophytes that are safe for livestock consumption" and test them to "see which would also act as natural insecticides." Reports that a few strains that met both criteria were found, with the strains "safe for mammals and other grazing wildlife." Suggests that the findings indicate that those who manage turf, including homeowners could user fewer insecticides. Notes Richmond is working to include the endophytes for sale in the United States Turfgrass market.
