| Abstract/Contents: | 1983 test to evaluate several nitrogen sources using methods most common in the turf industry. A spring, summer and fall response was determined by applying 1 lb N/1000 sq ft on April 21, July 26, and October 31. Plots representing each application date were sampled and evaluated as long as differences could be detected. The nitrogen sources evaluated on the Kenblue Kentucky bluegrass turf growing on a Maury silt loam soil were: (1) urea, 46-0-0; (2) methylene-urea (Scotts), 41-0-0; (3) sulfur-coated urea (Lakeshore) 36-0-0; (4) IBDU (Cotech), 31-0-0 (five) (5) Urea formaldehyde (BFC Chemicals), 38-0-0. During rapid growth periods clipping weights, color estimates, and height measurements were obtained weekly (minimum growth periods data was collected more than needed). Turf was irrigated four times during the summer. Mowing height was maintained at 2 inches (clipping left in each plot). A more complete summary will be prepared when the 1984 spring response data is collected. There was very little difference between urea, sulfur coated urea or methylene urea. Sources giving best color responses also resulted in the most growth and height response. Growth rate and response period of sulfur coated urea and urea is almost identical. IBDU did appear to have a good or slightly better color than the urea treatment. A summary of results showing growth rates, color, and height is presented along with charts showing color response from urea and sulfur coated urea IBDU applications. |
