Abstract/Contents:1983 test to evaluate commercially available and experimental plant growth regulators that could be used to reduce mowing frequency of Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue turf. Three treatment replication were applied to 6' x 10' plots on April 28. No nitrogen was added to the plots (tall fescue turf had been fertilized in 81, 82; Kentucky bluegrass turf had received no nitrogen in several years). For both tests, regulators, formulation, application rate, and results on height (6/17) dry weight (6/16) color (May), and seedhead predictor (6/16 for Kenhy only) are provided in tables. For the Kentucky bluegrass test, all plots, including untreated, grew little and weeds dominated by late summer. The maximum difference in height among treatments was 2.2 inches. The height and color measurements were negatively correlated; with the desirable green color generally declining with growth reduction. The dry weight measurements however, could not be correlated to either height or color. Since this test area was last mowed in late April, no seed heads of Kentucky bluegrass developed. For the tall fescue plots, growth was very rapid and seedhead production was normal. As with the Kentucky bluegrass test, as growth regulation increased (height decreased), the desirable green color declined. There was also no correlation with dry weight. All chemicals greatly reduced seedhead formation except EL-500. The MON 4621 treatment greatly reduced seadhead formation. The best overall treatment for tall fescue was EL-500 (SOW at 1.25 # ai/A) + Embark (25 at 0.25 # ai/A).
