Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study was to determine the effects of four cutting heights and four nitrogen fertility rates on weed encroachment into seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Sv.). Field plots were mowed twice weekly at cutting heights of 1.3, 2.5, 3.8, and 5.0 cm with clippings removed and were fertilized with nitrogen at rates of 0.13, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 kg are-1 per growing month in split applications. Weed invasion was rated visually over time as total percent weed coverage, and by actual weed counts. Few weeds appeared in any of the treatments during the first three years. Then a marked increase in weed invasion, mostly broadleafs, occurred in the spring, with some treatments exhibiting 80% weed coverage. Weed invasion was much less severe in plots that were mowed at the lowest, 1.3 cm height. Also, the most dense turf canopy was produced by the lowest cutting height. While cutting height had a considerable influence on weed invasion, there was no statistical difference in weed encroachment among nitrogen fertility levels."
