| Abstract/Contents: | 1982 update of 2 tests at a Kentucky location to evaluate the long-term quality of improved perennial ryegrass cultivars and evaluate their competitiveness with Kentucky bluegrass. Test 1 includes 13 varieties seeded at four lbs/M, with three pounds N/M/YR applied annually during fall and early winter. Since 1977, mowing height has been 1 inch. A table provides % Kentucky bluegrass (visually estimated in 3/82) and 1977-82 annual and 6-year average visual quality ratings (1 to 9;9=best quality) with significant differences (SD) indicated for 1982. Kentucky bluegrass was 0% in Derby, Yorktown II, and Manhattan; was less than 5% in Diplomat, Yorktown, Loretta, Citation, Pennfire, and Common, and was 16.7, 18.3, 30.0, and 61.7% in NK-100 , Eton, NK-200, and Ensporta, respectively. 6-year average ratings ranged from 3.8 (NK-100) to 6.3 (Derby). Test 2 evaluates Manhattan perennial ryegrass seeded alone and with Adelphi Kentucky bluegrass. Treatments are: 1) Manhattan alone at 1, 2, or 4 #/1000 sq ft and 2) Manhattan:Adelphi (% by weight) at 10:90, 20:80, or 50:50 (all at 2 #/1000 sq ft). A table provides % Kentucky bluegrass (rated in 3/82) with SD indicated and 1977-82 annual and 6-year average visual quality ratings with SD indicated for 1982. Kentucky bluegrass was 2% or less in Manhattan alone and was 10, 28, and 28% for 50:50, 20:80, 10:90, respectively. Visual ratings were not significantly different among treatments in 1982 but 6-year average ratings were about 1 rating point greater in the mixtures than in Manhattan alone. Test 3, established 9/82, is part of the National Perennial Ryegrass Test, and includes 48 named and experimental cultivars. Ratings will be made in 1983. |
