Abstract/Contents:1982 test to evaluate differing management regimes for Rebel tall fescue, Kenhy tall fescue, and Derby perennial ryegrass. Seeded in Sept. 1980, in a split plot design, these grasses were maintained at four nitrogen rates, 2 mowing heights, and two irrigation levels. Nitrogen (ammonium nitrate) treatments include no nitrogen, 2 lbs N per 1000 sq. ft. applied in March and May, 2 lbs N applied in September and November, and 4 lbs N applied in March, May, September and November. Each of three replications per variety is maintained at a 1.5 and 3-inch height. Also half the plots were irrigated as needed during the summer and the other half received no supplemental irrigation. Tables provide quality ratings, disease ratings, and tiller density results for different management regimes. Although first year differences were negligible, quality was affected by the management treatments in 1982. Differences in overall quality were partially attributed to early spring disease (mostly Rhizoctonia sp.) that occurred prior to the first spring mowing and to summer Rhizoctonia solani. Most disease occurred in turf maintained at the high mowing height. The spring disease occurred mostly in plots receiving irrigation the previous summer and the summer disease in the non-irrigated plots. Even under the 1.5 inch mowing height, Kenhy maintained very good quality and was only slightly coarser in texture than Rebel. These textural differences are reflected somewhat by the tiller counts that were made during November 1982 on the irrigated plots.
