| Abstract/Contents: | 1982 study to determine the best method of establishment and to evaluate the quality of the resulting turf when seeding with a common strain of zoysiagrass. The bluegrass area to be seeded was sprayed with Roundup to kill all existing vegetation, fertilized according to soil test results, and subsequently scalped to about 1". One-fourth of the sod was tilled with a rotovator to prepare a uniform seedbed. Sodium hydroxide scarified Korean zoysiagrass was seeded, vertically mowed (dethatch) two times prior to seeding, slit seeded with a Moore Unidrill, and no seedbed preparation. After seeding, the entire plot area was irrigated daily until establishment. MSMA was applied three times to control crabgrass, nitrogen was applied in June, July and August at 1.5 lbs N/1000 sq ft and the plot area was mowed at 1 1/4 inches. Percent zoysia ground cover on 8/13 and 9/15 for each seeding method is provided in a table. Zoysia established very quickly in the prepared seedbed and was almost totally established by late September. Where the killed sod was distributed by the vertical mower, establishment was much superior to both the slit-seeding or broadcast method. By the end of 1982, the zoysia had not formed a dense sod that is common with the improved zoysia varieties. The quality of the established sod will be judged in 1983. |
