Abstract/Contents:"Soil moisture may affect the distribution and survival of white grubs in turfgrass. Studies of oviposition and egg survival showed that developing eggs absorbed water from soil and increased more than 3-fold in weight during the first 10 days. Eggs developed normally at soil moisture or above the wilting point (ca. 12.5%), but shriveled and died in dryer soils. Eggs required about 18 days to hatch at 24 degrees Celsius (74 degrees Fahrenheit). Length of incubation period, survival, and final egg weight did not differ at soil moistures within the range required for survival; however, few eggs were laid in dry soil or when moisture approached field capacity. Depth at which eggs were laid varied in response to moisture gradients. The chorion (outer shell) of the egg is covered densely and uniformly by minute tubercles, but specialized hydropyles are absent. The eggs are most susceptible to desiccation when newly-laid or close to hatching, but are relatively resistant during the middle stage of development. These differences are associated with changes in the thickness of the serosal cuticle." Includes a table on female oviposition and egg survival of southern masked chafers (C. immaculata) at five levels of soil moisture.
