| Abstract/Contents: | Isofenphos (Oftanol) was applied in late April, early June, mid-July, or early August for control of southern masked chafer grubs. The study was conducted in a heavily infested (ca. 10-20 grubs/0.1 m2) golf course rough in Lexington, Kentucky. Thatch accumulation was < 0.5 cm. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with 4 replications, with individual plots measuring 3 x 3 m. The granular insecticides were mixed with sand and hand-shaken over the plots. The August applications of Oftanol and Diazinon (as a standard) were immediately irrigated with 1.5-2.0 cm of water. Earlier Oftanol treatments (April 29, June 7, July 10) were not watered in. Surviving grubs were sampled on September 2, 1981, 1 month after the last applications, by cutting a 2.4 m x 30 cm x 4 cm deep strip (0.75 m2) with a mechanical sod cutter, and examing the sod and underlying soil for grubs. Excellent control with no phytotoxicity was obtained with all treatments of Oftanaol 5G, and is consistent with the prolonged residual toxicity of Oftanol in the soil. Diazinon 5G, applied in early August when most grubs were 1st instars, also provided excellent control. No phytotoxicity was evident with any treatment. A table provides treatments, application rates and date applied, use of irrigation, total rainfall, and # grubs/m2. |
