Abstract/Contents: | In initial studies to identify the pheromone released by female southern masked chafer beetles, hexane washes of field-collected virgin female chafers were analyzed by thin-layer and gas chromatography. The female washes were separated into various fractions which were tested for attractiveness to male beetles in field trials. The sex attractant is a non-polar compound which was recoverable by thin layer chromatography but not by gas-liquid chromatography. Efforts to recover, identify and field test the pheromone are continuing. |
