Abstract/Contents:"Suitability of seven cool and warm season turfgrasses (Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, chewings fescue, perennial ryegrass, zoysiagrass, creeping bentgrass, bermudagrass) as a host for C. immaculata was studied in greenhouse trials. In free choice tests, more eggs were laid under tall fescue, fine fescue, and bermudagrass than under other grasses. In paired comparisons with Kentucky bluegrass, grubs significantly preferred bermudagrass over Kentucky bluegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass over fine fescue. Results with other grasses were not significant. Weight gain of grubs over 6 weeks was greatest on perennial ryegrass and least on fine fescue. No host plant-related mortality was observed. These tests showed that Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and bermudagrass are highly suitable hosts for masked chafer grubs. The relatively little damage on tall fescue lawns is apparently due to tolerance, not antibiosis or nonpreference. The dense rhizomes and tolerance, not antbiosis or nonpreference. The dense rhizomes and stolons of zoysiagrass apparently inhibited female movement and egg-laying. Fine fescue was generally the least acceptable host."
