| Abstract/Contents: | "Studies are being made on the mechanism controlling species density (i.e. the number of species/m2) in grassland. The objective of this work is to distinguish between conditions in which grassland tends to increase in species density and conditions which allow the persistence of monocultures. In current investigations, the seasonal patterns of shoot growth and litter accumulation are being measured in contrasting types of grassland. The results of this work suggest:--(1) that the potential for high species density (>20 species/m2) corresponds to the range of 350 - 750 g/m2 dry weight in maximum standing crop + litter; (2) that 750 g/m2 is the threshold for competitive exclusion, and (3) that it is possible to predict the circumstances in which attempts to increase species density will be successful. Experiment results have suggested that the productivity and species composition of grassland may be affected by soil toxins originating from species such as Holcus lanatus and Agrostis tenuis." |
