Abstract/Contents:"Those plants which absorb nutrients and water more efficiently may survive certain stresses better. Recently we showed the efficacy of the vital stain, Evan's blue, for root hairs from glasshouse grown plants. Plants from the three cultivars, 'Pensacola' bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugg.), 'Tifway' bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis Davy) and 'Tx. Common' St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum[Walt.]Kuntze), were grown in 0.25 mm quartz sand in Dee pots (62.5 x 250 mm) in the glasshouse for 80 days and 0.25-0.50 mm quartz sand in mature turf plots at the Texas A&M Turfgrass Field Research Laboratory. Root hairs from field grown plants were comparable in appearance to those from plants grown under glasshouse/container conditions. Root hair viabilities were also comparable. Root hair densities as measured over a square mm were comparable when root hairs were present, however, there were more areas along the roots without root hairs of plants grown under field conditions."
