Abstract/Contents:Evaluated the flight activity and mating behavior of northern and southern masked chafer and determined if female masked chafers produce an air-borne chemical attractant. Behavioral observations were conducted at night on golf courses and home lawns. To determine if there was a time difference in the activity of the 2 chafer species, 2 blacklight traps were operated for six nights, with the catch checked hourly. Prescence of a sex attractant was tested for by confining virgin female beetles in small traps, and recording capture of males. Tests for an attractant also involved washing virgin females with solvents such as ether, and exposing only the rinses in traps. Flight and mating of the southern masked chafer begins at dusk and terminates about 2 hours later. Males emerge from the sod and skim over the turf in search of females, which climb upward onto grass blades. Mating pairs are often found surrounded by clusters of additional males. Behavior of the northern masked chafer is similar, but occurs mostly after midnight. Trapping experiments indicated that both southern and northern masked chafer females produce a potent air-borne sex attractant that attracts either species of males. Female rinses in cyclohexane or ether were effective baits for luring males to traps. Although the 2 chafer species appeaer to use the same chemical sex attratant, they avoid interbreeding by being active at different times of the night.
