Abstract/Contents:1981 study to determine the feasibility of applying a combination of pre and postemergent herbicides for control of smooth crabgrass. Treatments were Dacthal 75 wp (DCPA) at 10.5; daconate 6(MSMA) at 2.0; MCPP at 1.0 + 2, 4-D at 0.5; Dacthal 75 wp at 10.5 + daconate 6 at 2.0 or 4.0; and Dacthal 75 wp + Daconate 6 + MCPP + 2,4-D at 0.5 lbs a.i./acre respectively. Prior to application of initial treatments, an established kenblue KY bluegrass turf was maintained at 1 inch, fertilized in April with 1 1/2 lb N/1000 sq. ft., and dethatched to encourage crabgrass germination. Individual plots measured 6' x 10'. Three replications of the treatments were sprayed in late May, late June and late July. A table provides average visual rating of percent crabgrass cover from 8/20 and 9/10/81 for each treatment and each spraying date. Results: 1) Dacthal applied in May, prior to rapid crabgrass germination, gave good-control of crabgrass in all treatments. 2) Dacthal appeared to have no beneficial effect when applied in combination with MSMA during June or July. 3) The combination Dacthal and MSMA treatment gave best control when applied in May. Evidently, some crabgrass had begun to germinate prior to the May application. 4) MSMA gave effective crabgrass control when applied in June or July but this treatment was not enhanced by Dacthal or by the double rate of MSMA. The double rate of MSMA did cause some Ky bluegrass phytotoxicity when applied in late June. 5) The MCPP + 2,4-D treatment did not affect crabgrass control even when applied in combination with the other herbicides.
