Abstract/Contents: | "Two long duration studies to assess the intraspecific rooting potentials of 24 bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) cultivars have been completed under non-limiting moisture conditions in a root column facility at Texas A&M. The 24 cultivars were each grown from single 2.5 cm shoots with 5 cm of roots that had been planted in growth cones and transplanted in 7.6 cm x 210 cm tubes when established. Rooting medium was washed mortar sand. Fertility was with 20N-20P-20K at rate of 1.0 kg N are-1. Turfs were clipped weekly at 2.5 cm. A drip irrigation system insured non-limiting water. No disease or insect damage occurred. The first study was harvested after 160 days of growth by sectionalizing the tube every 30 cm. The second study was identical and harvested after 210 days. Results indicated that (1) a duration in excess of 160 days is required to conduct a reliable assessment of genetic rooting potential; (2) Cynodon spp. has a genetic rooting potential of at least 210 cm depth; (3) rooting potential of Cynodon spp. is a major contributor to the overall drought resistance mechanism of this species; (4) shoot biomass is not a reliable marker in selecting deep rooting genotypes within Cynodon spp.; and (5) rooting depths, total root weights, and shoot weights of bermudagrass turfgrasses vary substantially in terms of intraspecific genetic rooting potentials." |
