| Abstract/Contents: | "While species-rich grasslands are being destroyed at an alarming rate by conversion into arable land or by reseeding, new swards are being created on motorways and roadside verges as well as in country parks and similar areas. Seeds mixtures sown in these situations usually consist of one to four species of grass, often mixed with a legume. Recently many local authorities and highway departments have expressed interest in sowing low maintenance swards which contain a mixture of grasses and attractive forbs (herbaceous plants other than grasses), especially in areas such as country parks where amenity is a primary cosideration. An experiment was started in April 1973, in which mixtures of native forbs and grasses were sown in previously arable chalk soil. The preliminary results available by the of 1976 indicated some of the problems encountered in establishing species and suggested some possible practical application of the information gained." |
