Abstract/Contents:"Turfgrass cultivars can be for a wide range of possible uses and there are many possible features for assessment. Before Descriptive and Recommended Lists of cultivars can be drawn up, users' needs and priorities and the cost benefit of potential improvements must be clear. Eleven important turfgrass attributes are:- 1. Rapid establishment from seed. 2. Spread by stolons or rhizomes. 3. Good appearance (light/dark: uniform: no seasonal effects: cleanly cut). 4. Disease and pest resistance/tolerance. 5. Wear tolerance (plant, shoot, leaf number and morphology: cellulose etc.: root mass and depth). 6. Recovery from wear (crown, location, rhizomes). 7. Compactness (weed exclusion, competitiveness) [or opposite for ingress of natural spp. and suitability for mixtures?] 8. Slow vertical growth, short maximum height. 9. Ease of cutting. 10. Absence of seed heads. 11. Absence of fibre (mat or thatch). Tolerance of special conditions (e.g. salt, shade, drought, flood, heavy metals) may also be important though this may well necessitate reassessment of 1 - 11 in what is in effect a special environment. Table 1 suggests which of these attributes, in their positive (+) or negative (-) form, are required for each of ten turfgrass uses, arranges roughly in order of decreasing intensity of wear within groups."
