| Abstract/Contents: | "The amenity grass breeder is faced with great problems in attempting to translate amenity requirements into clearly defined breeding objectives and selection criteria. He lacks vital information concerning the relationships between, for example, wear resistance or tolerance of close mowing and individual plant characteristics. Assessments are, therefore, often subjective and selection is often intuitive. Carefully chosen products of natural selection can provide useful information relating to selection criteria and also form a sound basis for breeding programmes. Individual populations are collected and subjected to cycles of assessment and selective breeding in isolation. Initial selection is concerned with reducing variability within populations and is based mainly upon spaced plant characteristics. One generation of selection (retaining on average 20% of individuals in a population) is sufficient to reduce genetic variability within populations to negligible amounts (Table 1). Subsequent selection between and within populations depends upon information from sown swards and single genotype tiller plots as well as spaced plants. The success of this approach depends upon:- 1. Sound ecological knowledge in collecting the basic population. 2. The relevance of assessments to ultimate objectives. 3. The relationships between phenotypic assessments and genotypic differences." |
