Abstract/Contents: | "Seed production is an essential means of linking the breeder and the consumer. Production is a form of communication in transferring knowledge. In Lolium perenne we have a unique combination of technical value (Tv) and seed production capability (Pv). Seed production capability can be defined not only in yield of seed per acre, but also in terms of flexibility of production between different regions and countries, and of consistency of supply from year to year. One of the most important factors influencing flexibility of production is time of flowering and harvesting. It is proposed to relate Tv and Pv to economic value (Ev) in the formula:- 3 Tv x Pv = Ev. The economic value is the major influence on the final impact of a cultivar on the economy of a system. The Ev of Lolium perenne cultivars of high technical value is generally good. In other species this combination is not easily reached, either because the seed yields are low or more generally because the cultivars lack flexibility in production. It is easier to obtain a high Ev in Lolium than in Agrostis, Phleum and Festuca species. Economic value becomes very important where major difficulty exists in combining to a high level both Tv and Pv. When we have reached an acceptable minimum technical value in turf cultivars, then the production value will become vitally important. It is important that we use as bases for comparison control cultivars which have not only a good Tv but also a reasonable Pv." |
