Abstract/Contents:"Turf grass breeding in New Zealand provides the turf industry with cultivars that respond to the requirements of our unique environment. Turf perennial ryegrass is the main species developed for sportsfields in New Zealand. It is a species very well adapted to our conditions for use in sportsfields. The cultivars selected need strong witner growth attributes in order to recover from winter wear. Other species such as Browntop (Agrostis capillaris), fine fescue (Festuca rubra) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) are also bred in New Zealand. In order to maintain a viable seed industry, breeding also requires high seed yield. A crucial part of breedin for our unique New Zealand conditions is the use of endophyte (Neotyphodium). This provides perennial ryegrass and tall fescue cultivars with higher resistance to pests and insects. Endophte will remain an important part of our future work in breeding to achieve more sustainable qualities."
