Abstract/Contents:"The objectives of this research were 1) to evaluate dithiopyr for pre- and postemergence large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] and smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Screb. ex Schweig.) Schreb. es Muhl] control and 2) to evaluate different formulations of dithiopyr for crabgrass control and effects on Kentucky bluegrass [Poa pratensis (L.) cv. Plush] growth and quality. The preemergencee tests were applied in early April and postemergenc test were applied in June or July. The test sites were located at VPI&SU Turfgrass Research Center on Kentucky bluegrass which was established in the Fall of 1987. This excellent turfgrass was mowed at 3.2 cm, vertical mowed, aerified and overseeded with crabgrass seed at 375 g/1000 m2 to promote crabgrass emergence and growth. The mowing height was raised to 3.8 cm in July. The growth stage for one postemergence test was 3-true leaf to 1-tiller stage with a few 5-tiller plants. The emulsifiable concentrate formulations (EC) of dithiopyr at 0.28 kg/ha or above gave excellent early preemergence control of crabgrass. Using dithiopyr (EC) rates below 0.42 kg/ha, sequential applications were required to maintain residiual crabgrass control into October. However, sequential dithiopyr (EC) treatments at 0.14 kg/ha provided excellent crabgrass control into October. The three granular formulations (G) of dithiopyr evaluated were MON 15178 (0.05%), MON 15181 (0.10%), and MON 15152 (0.25%). The rates of these formulations of dithiopyr (G) for excellent crabgrass control through October was 0.14 kg/ha for MON 15178, 0.21 kg/ha for MON 15181 and 0.28 kg/ha for MON 15152. Below these rates, sequential application of the granular formulations were necessary for crabgrass control at the above rates. In these studies, three times as much dithiopyr in an EC formulation was needed for excellent crabgrass control as compared to a 0.05% granular formulation. In the early postemergence test dithiopyr (EC) was slow to give adequate control; however, late in the season, crabgrass control was good. In the mid-postmergenc test, dithiopyr (EC) was very slow to provide excellent crabgrass control. Consistent postemergence crabgrass control required a 0.84 kg/ha rate of dithiopyr EC. The quality of the Kentucky bluegrass was excellent and there was no apparent injury to the bluegrass."
