Abstract/Contents: | "Field experiments were conducted on an established perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) to evaluate postemergence activity of dithiopyr and quinclorac in smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb. ex Schweig.) Schreb. ex Muhl.] and large crabgrass [D. sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] control. All treatments were applied to 1 by 3 m plots with a CO2-backpack sprayer at a pressure of 152 kPa in 675 L/ha. Treatments were applied on June 13, 1990 when the large crabgrass was at the three- to four-leaf stage. At 60 DAT, quinclorac applied at 0.84 kg/ha controlled large crabgrass effectively, irrespective of the herbicide combinations, including benefin, pendimethalin, dithiopyr, MSMA, fenoxaprop, dicamba, bentazon, 2,4-D plus triclopyr, 2,4-D, 2,4-DP, and MCPP. Quinclorac applied alone or in above combinations also controlled white clover (Trifolium repens L.), slender or creeping speedwell (Veronica filiformis Sm.) 95% or better. Yellow woodsorrel (Oxalis stricta L.) control was not adequate with quinclorac (0.84 lb/A) whether applied alone or in combination with 2,4-D, dicamba, benefin, dithiopyr, or fenoxaprop. Late-post (three- to four-tiller stage, July 3, 1990) applications of quinclorac at 0.28 and 0.5 kg/ha in combination with dithiopyr at 0.28 kg/ha controlled large crabgrass 98% or better 42 DAT. At 60 DAT, crabgrass control was only 65 and 82%, respectively with the 0.28 and 0.56 kg/ha of quinclorac. Quinclorac (0.56 to 0.84 kg/ha) was very safe to 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) on a nursery green (September 6, 1990 application). Bentgrass injury was slight and was rarely noticeable 7, 14, and 21 DAT. Bentgrass color was slightly lower (8.0) at the 0.75 lb/A rate of quinclorac on a rating scale of 1 to 9.0, where 6.5 will be minimal acceptable level. The addition of Ferromac-AC did not improve bentgrass discoloration/chlorosis. Quinclorac did not injure bentgrass when combined with wither BAS-9002S or dithiopyr at 0.28 kg/ha. Quinclorac also controlled common chinchweed (Stellaria media (L.) Vill.]. In a putting green trial, 'Penncross' bentgrass was tolerant to dithiopyr up to 1.1 kg/ha. A slight injury (13%) was noted with dithiopyr at 1.68 k/ha. Bentgrass color or quality was not affected with postemergence treatments of dithiopyr. Also, the creeping bentgrass on the same putting green treated consecutively for three years did not show any detrimental effects on the recovery or overall quality of the bentgrass. In the perennial ryegrass trial, dithiopyr applied preemergence at 0.28 to 0.43 kg/ha controlled large crabgrass effectively. However, the 0.43 kg/ha rate was not effective when applied at the tiller-stage of crabgrass." |
