Abstract/Contents:The root-zones of six different long-established sports grounds were examined for soil particle size distribution, organic matter, permeability, pore volume, water retention and shear strength. The purpose was to assess the effect of a technical standard developed in the German Federal Republic for the establishment of turf sports grounds, and the extent to which the requirements of the standard could be met. The requirements could be met, provided that the grading curve of the root-zone lay in the centre of the particle size distribution range, with about equal proportions of fine, medium and coarse sand, and that the proportion of particles smaller than 0.02 mm was reduced. The pore size distribution was useful for evaluating, in root-zones after wear, the amount of water stored in them and available to plants, their ability to absorb water and their air volume. Experiments confirmed that lava sand improved permeability and water storage. Even when shear strength was measured by means of a vane tester, there was no clear correlation with other indices, because readings were affected by the compacted soil surface and by the thatch layer. The shear strength did, however, make it possible to identify zones of different grades of compactness on sports grounds.
