Abstract/Contents:The affected area of fairy rings caused by Marasmius oreades were on an open shale soil, pH 5.5 to 5.9 and covered about 2 hectares. Impermeability of soil with M. oreades mycelium had been recognized for a long time. It is common for fairy rings to be more severe when turfs are poorly watered than conversely. Rings are not usually noticed until well into the third or fourth season of growth when they are about 50-100 cm in diameter. There are several possible causes of incomplete rings: Mycelium may encounter unsuitable soil or barrier growths, e.g., stone, gravel, or sand.
