Abstract/Contents:"Hetchell Wood has an area of 11.7 ha and is situated on a scarp forming the western edge of the Magnesian Limestone which runs as a narrow band 12 km N.E. of Leeds. It is a Yorkshire Naturlists' Trust Nature Reserve which is subjected to heavy recreational pressures throughout the year. This continual wear results in the extensive erosion of the footpaths. In an attempt to monitor the effect of trampling on vegetation, soil fauna and soil structure, a section of established footpath was fenced off during June 1976. An enclosure was designed to divert two footpaths of different intensities of use. For each footpath there are four experimental areas...Soil samples were taken from each area prior to the erection of the fences, and now are taken at three-monthly intervals...The response of plant communities to a changing intensity of trampling can be interpreted in terms of varying physiological adaptations and resultant changes among species in relative competitive advantage. This represents a dynamic process in which the patterns of community change and the final equilibrium situation can be best understood by repeated sampling of an experimentally perturbed system."
