Abstract/Contents:"During the summer of 1994 and 1995 two scouts have been conducting weekly monitoring on four golf courses. Funding for the scouts has been through Environmental Youth Corps and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Each course (greens, tees and fairways) is scouted weekly for insects and disease activity and a record is kept of problems. Weed mapping is done once during the season and a thorough grub mapping will be done in August. Many golf course superintendents and turf managers scout for insects and diseases, however they do not have time to do so systematically and frequently. On courses where scouting occurs, often records of scouting are not kept. The goal of these projects is to demonstrate specific turf monitoring techniques, the usefulness of scouting and the importance of record keeping. The ultimate goal of these projects is to have someone from the golf course take over the scouting and continue it as a part of routine integrated pest management program. The result of this should be early diagnosis of diseases and insects, improved treatment timing and treatment of problem areas only. A weed garden has been established over the past three summers. It contains annual and perennial grassy weeds, annual broadleaf weeds and perennial broadleaf weeds which are commonly found in turf. All weed specimens are labelled and these serve as a learning tool for turf managers.
