Abstract/Contents:Developments in roof turf are discussed and the results are presented of turf culture trials on 8 soil mixtures. The grass rooting zones were composed of topsoil and combinations of sand, volcanic lava sand, pumice particles, peat and Hygromull or Styromull. Their physical properties are described. The media based on lava sand and pumice have a large pore-volume, good permeability and a high water-holding capacity. They are laid 10 cm deep over a 15-cm drainage layer of pumice. In dry summer weather, they require watering to saturation point at intervals of 3-4 weeks.
