Abstract/Contents: | Thatch and the characteristics of thatch are described. Excessive nitrogen fertilization is included as a cause of thatch buildup, while the concept of thatch being caused by failure to remove mowing clippings was disproved. Scalping, mowing turf at a much lower height than normal, is one method of thatch removal. This method may severely injure turf. Another method of thatch removal is vertical mowing. General characteristics of vertical mowing and when to vertical mow are also included. |
