Abstract/Contents: | "Ball bounce resilience and traction of renovated turf of Lolium perenne L. were studied in response to a wide range of fertilizer nitrogen treatments (0-625 kg ha-1). Experiments were made on a sand rootzone and on the local sandy loam topsoil. Before wear ball bounce resiience decreased with increasing nitrogen on both sand and soil rootzones with little differnce between sand and soil. During wear the results were dominated by the effects of rootzone construction, the sand retaining good values of ball bounce resilience. When the soil dried out at the end of the playing season the values of ball bounce resiience exceeeded those for the sand so that the overall seasonal variation was much greater for soil than for sand, which provided more consistent playing conditions. Traction, in contrast to ball bounce resilience, showed large differences between the sand and soil before wear and there was a response to nitrogen, especially on the sand, which persisted throughout wear. Traction on sand increased rapidly up to 100 kg ha-1 but over the range 100-400 kg ha-1 differences in traction were small. During wear on the soil the response to nitrogen disappeared and throughout the season the sand rootzone provided better traction except at the lowest levels of nitrogen. The problems of loss of traction and surface instability which are potential problems in sand constructions, are discussed." |
