Abstract/Contents:"Good pitches make the game, or so we are told. It is alleged today's pitches lack pace and bounce and if we could only, once again, produce the hard fast pitches of yesteryear, the game would improve, not only from the point of view of the player, but also the spectator. Batsmen would be able to make shots, fast bowlers would be encouraged and players would take to spin bowling. Our village greens and County grounds would once again be graced with the guile of the right-arm leg spinner." The research is divided and discussed in seven different areas. 1. Establishing the objective. 2. Compiling a check list. 3. Investigating pace and rebound bounce. 4. Selecting the right type of soil. 5. Establishing parameters of bounce under playing conditions. 6. Practical trials. and 7. Energy absorption on impact with the pitch. "Unfortunately each square requires different treatment depending on the type of soil, the location, the standard of cricket, and the weather. We have the technology today to produce good pitches but there is no such thing as a package deal. All pitches are different. The groundsman must appreciate the needs of his ground and once he has proven his ability and understanding of the game's requirements, he should be allowed to use his initiative and manage his square."
