| Abstract/Contents: | "The problems facing plant growth on colliery waste heaps and methods for reclaiming such tips are briefly described. In some cases, ameliorative treatment has proved initially satisfactory but later the site has regressed to its previous acid state and the vegetation has died. A phosphorus x limestone factorial experiment was replicated on seven colliery waste heaps using a grass and legume sward, and the seven spoils were also analysed for pH, pyrite content, and acid-neutralizing capacity. The response to limestone on each site was relatd to the analytical results. It was found that initial pH, pyrite content, and acid-neutralizing capacity were all important in determining limestone requirement." |
