Abstract/Contents:A fertilizer is any material which contains one or more essential plant nutrients. Selection of a fertilizer should be made on how well it will perform in providing the nutrients needed for adequate turf growth. Fertilizers are selected based on what the plant needs and what the fertilizer analysis and grade are. A fertilizer analysis is the percentage composition of a fertilizer and the grade is the minimum guaranteed anlaysis of plant nutrient content. Difficulty in making a selection of fertilizers is in dealing with the way the analysis is stated. The decision to choose a fertilizer should be made more on ratios rather than exact analysis or grade. Soil testing is a guide to determine levels of nutrients required for adequate growth. Soil testing will give relative levels of nutrients. The basis for scheduling fertilization will use this information. Soil testing is strongly suggested for mapping fertilization strategies. A soil test is a valuable guide to the fertilizer ratios which will be of most benefit under specific soil conditions.
