Abstract/Contents: | "The compost project in Naperville, Illinois was begun last June with collection of 2000 cubic yards of grass from 1000 homes. When mixed with last year's composted leaves at a ratio of one part grass to two parts leaves, the total quantity amounted to 6000 cubic yards. This was the "standard batch," according to Steven Kaar, superintendent of Operations and Maintenance for Naperville's Dept. of Transportation. The town found a ratio of 1 to 4 (grass to leaves) easier to work with, while 1 to 1 caused clumping problems. In conrast, reports the University of Illinois Center for Solid Waste Management and Research, Chicago's pilot program claimed success in composting a mixture of 7 parts grass, 1 part decomposed leaves, and 1 part wood chips." |
