Abstract/Contents:"Dry patch disease is a common problem on fine turf areas, and it is at its worst during the summer months. Dr. Neil Baldwin, plant pathologist with the Sports Turf Research Institute, describes some of the latest research that has been done into the condition and suggests a programme of remedial action. During the drought conditions in summer 1989 dry patch caused severe problems on fine turf throughout the UK. In many areas the mild and dry winter followed by dry weather in spring 1990 led to persistant and extensive dry patch on golf and bowling greens, and also cricket grounds and tennis courts. Currently, alleviation of the symptoms of dry patch may be achieved at least partly by the use of wetting agents to aid the re-wetting of dry, water-repellent turf. This article describes how wetting agents may be used to their maximum effect and gives advice on dry patch control for greenkeepers and groundsmen to follow."
