Abstract/Contents: | "The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Multiguard Protect EC for nematode suppression in a bentgrass putting green. A creeping bentgrass putting green renovated in 1998 in Enid, OK was chosen for this study. The green was originally constructed of Eda loamy fine sand soil, but continuous top-dressing with sand resulted in a USDA classification of the soil at the time of trial implementation as a loamy sand. The treatment and non-treated control were replicated four times (plots were 6 ft x 25 ft), with one replication of each treatment located on the east, south, west, and north sides of the green. Multiguard Protect EC was applied with a CO2 pressurized wheelbarrow sprayer with four TX8008 flat fan nozzles, calibrated to deliver 88 gal/A. The first application occurred on 29 Aug at 8 gal/A and was preceded by knife-tine aerification of all plots. Two subsequent treatments were applied on a 14-day interval at 5.5 gal/A. Following all applications plots were watered using a hose followed by overhead irrigation. For nematode assays, eight to ten sub-samples per plot were collected with a 1-in. soil sampling tube to a depth of 4-in. and bulked for each treatment. Nematodes were recovered by wet sieving/sugar flotation and identified to genus. The data were subjected to a two-tailed t-test (α=0.05). The 2011 season was abnormally hot and dry. Average temperature across the state of Oklahoma between 1 Jun and 31 Aug was the warmest on record (86.8°F). These conditions resulted in greater than normal heat stress to creeping bentgrass. There were no significant differences in nematode populations between the non-treated control treatment and the Multiguard Protect EC treatment for any of the sampling dates. No symptoms of phytotoxicity were observed." |
