Abstract/Contents:"This trial was conducted at Tekoa Country Club, Westfield, MA to evaluate fungicide treatments for control of anthracnose under natural disease conditions. The plot consisted of annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass maintained under on native soil 'push-up' putting green (sandy loam soil). Mowing was performed seven times per week (0.125-in. cutting height) with a Toro Flex 21 greens mower and clippings collected. Fertilizer was applied as 30-0-0 (0.07 lb nitrogen (N)/1,000 ft2) on 6 Apr, 30-0-0 (0.07 lb N/1,000 ft2) on 26 Apr, 30-0-0 (0.14 lb N/1,000 ft2) on 14 May. Fungicides were applied on 6 Apr to control Microdochium patch (Civitas L 5.87 fl oz/1,000 ft2, Medallion 50WP 0.37 oz/1,000 ft2), 26 Apr (Trinity 1.67SC 1.0 fl oz/1,000 ft2, IP 233 2.0SE 4.0 fl oz/1,000 ft2, Trilogy 1.67SC 2.93 fl oz/1,000 ft2) and on 3 May to control leaf spot (Insignia 20WG 0.9 oz/1,000 ft2). Insecticides were applied for annual bluegrass weevils and white grubs on 26 Apr (Firebird Pro 0.6 oz/1,000 ft2 and Accelpryn 0.3 fl oz/1,000 ft2). Plant growth regulators were applied 26 Apr (Cutless 0.11 fl oz/1,000 ft2). The putting green was irrigated as needed to prevent drought stress. Individual plots measured 3 ft x 4 ft and were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications per treatment. Treatments, initiated on 31 May, were applied based on label or suggested rates at 14-day intervals, and continued through 8 Aug. All treatments were applied at a nozzle pressure of 40 psi using a CO2-pressurized boom sprayer equipped with two XR TeeJet 8004VS nozzles in the equivalent of 2.0 gallons of water per 1,000 ft2. Weekly ratings for anthracnose were made by visually assessing percent area per plot expressing symptoms. Turf quality was assessed weekly on a 1 to 9 rating scale (9=best, 6=acceptable). All anthracnose assessments and turf quality ratings were subjected to analysis of variance and means were separated using Fisher's protected least significant difference test (P < 0.05). Disease pressure during the trial was moderate, with untreated plots reaching maximum symptom expression on 15 Aug. Overall, most treatments controlled anthracnose significantly better than the untreated control, with exception of IKF-205 treatments and Daconil Ultrex + Chipco Signature + Civitas + Harmonizer on 18 Jul. The two separate tank-mixes, Civitas + Harmonizer and Daconil Ultrex + Chipco Signature, provided the best control of anthracnose throughout the trial. Interestingly, the combination of the two tank-mixes (Daconil Ultrex + Chipco Signature + Civitas + Harmonizer) did not control anthracnose better than the tank-mixes alone on 15 Aug and turf quality was also numerically lower on multiple rating dates. Turf quality was likely influenced by low nitrogen fertility at the end of the trial, as plots had not received fertilizer since 14 May in order to exacerbate disease severity. Phytotoxicity was not observed for any of treatments in this trial."
