Abstract/Contents:" The study was conducted at the Valentine Turfgrass Research Center, University Park, PA, on newly established 'Notable' perennial ryegrass maintained at 2.0 in and mowed twice weekly. The trials were situated atop a Hagerstown silt loam soil with a pH of 7.2. The experimental turf area was fertilized with 1.0 lb nitrogen (Urea 46-0-0) on 11 Jul, and sprayed with Drive at 0.367 oz/1,000 sq. ft. and Trimec Classic at 1.25 fl. Oz./1,000 sq. ft. on 9 Jul. Treatment plots, 3 ft x 3 ft, were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Preventive application of fungicides was made on 21 Jul unless otherwise noted, although timed spray applications were performed 14, 9, and 7 days prior to inoculation and 1 day after inoculation. All the products were applied with a CO2-powered sprayer using a TeeJet 11008E nozzle in water equivalent to 2 gal per 1,000 sq ft. The greenhouse was enclosed using a 6 mil poly film plastic sheet. The turfgrass in the experimental area was inoculated on 22 Jul with a spore and mycelial suspension in a slurry of rye grain containing a three-isolate pool of Pythium aphanidermatum. An automated overhead misting system was used to increase relative humidity in the greenhouse. Windows located at each end of the greenhouse were closed at night to maintain warm temperatures, and opened during the daylight hours to prevent temperatures from exceeding 105°. Disease severity (Index 0-10; 0=turf asymptomatic; 10=>90% turf area symptomatic) was assessed 27 Jul through 6 Aug, and the final disease severity rating was taken on 12 Aug. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and multiple comparisons of the me an values were made using the Waller-Duncan k-ratio t-test. Pythium blight foliar blight disease development was steady throughout the trial, and increased to a mean severity of 7.0 in the non-treated control plots on 12 Aug. Numerous products provided excellent disease control throughout the course of the experiment. Heritage, Disarm SC, tank-mixes containing Civitas, Insignia, Segway, and several numbered compounds provided very good control of the disease. No phytotoxicity was observed in the experiment on any of the assessment dates."
