Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"A very rare, shortened version of the earlier edition. The issue of seed selection involving turfgrasses plus clover versus turfgrasses alone was addressed in 1906:

The selection of grasses and clovers which are to form a fine dense sward should be regarded as in the highest degree important. They must be permanent in character, adapted to the soil, and free from coarse-growing varieties. On land which is liable to burn, clovers maintain their verdure under a hot sun after grasses have become brown. Still, the two classes of plants must be carefully proportioned, for although clovers show conspicuously in summer, they partially disappear in winter, when the grasses are predominant. Clovers are also very slippery, they show signs of wear earlier than grasses, hold moisture longer after a shower, and quickly discolour tennis balls. It is therefore advisable to sow grasses only for tennis lawns, putting and bowling greens, unless the turf is peculiarly liable to scorch in summer. Then it is an open question whether an admixture of clovers may be regarded as the lesser of two evils. For the reasons stated it is our practice to omit clover seeds from mixtures to be sown for the purposes named, unless a wish to the contrary is expressed." p. 350-351
