Abstract/Contents: | In the original golf courses in Scotland, the game of golf was merely put onto a pre-existing landscape, the course construction was dependent upon the individual site. The modern golf course though, is grafted into a landscape, thus it is the landscape that must be made to conform to the game of golf. This brings with it a potentially serious damaging of the environment. Should a golf course be constructed without much consideration as to what environmental changes it may effect, as has been done in the United States, and should it be built according to the demands of the golfers and not the landscape itself, then the golf course can only detract from the environment into which it is built, and never enhance it. However, an attentive and informed construction that tries to bring a golf course into as close a relationship to the surrounding environment as possible does not lie beyond design capabilities. According to the author, it should, in fact, become the focus of golf course design. |
