Abstract/Contents: | Dr. C. R. Funk at Rutgers University, NJ, developed the turf type tall fescues of which Rebel is one example. Rebel is finer leafed (33%), and denser (up to 188% more tillers) than Kentucky-31 tall fescue. Rebel was the first tall fescue turf that was heat and drought tolerant, attractive, and persistant without the clump-type growth habit characteristic of Kentucky-31 and other pasture type varieties. Turf-type tall fescues are more shade-tolerant than Kentucky-31. They also take on an even finer leaf texture in shade. Compared to perennial ryegrass, tall fescue germinates and establishes more slowly. It is intolerant of a more close height of cut, and has less plant density. They are more susceptable to Brown patch and Pythium. Turf-type tall fescue seed mixed with 10% Kentucky bluegrass makes a sod with added strength and improved recuperative potential. Overseeding is easy since tttf produces little thatch. Tttf requires less fertilizer than kentucky bluegrass: 1.5 to 2 pds N/1000 sq ft annually. Tttfs have excellent resistance to grubs, and insects. Sod webworms are not a problem. Brown patch, Pythium Leaf and Spot (Net blotch) are the major diseases of tttfs. |
