Abstract/Contents: | Includes: An investigation of the influences of mowing frequency on the biomass and the plant composition within a given area. Possibilities of utilizing the grass clippings are discussed, with particular attention paid to agricultural applications, such as animal feed. Composting is discussed, conditions for optimal composting giving the maximum yield, needing minimal amounts of time yet producing few pollutants are also outlined. Employing clippings for either of the above mentioned uses raises the question of the environmental safety of the grass clippings. Grasses directly next to streets showed significantly higher levels of lead and cadmium, with grasses next to Autobahns showing dangerously high levels of lead. A correlation has been found between the method used to cut the grasses, and the levels of toxins the clippings contain. Questionairres were sent to various organizations and institutions in charge of grass maintenance inquiring as to frequency of mowing, kinds of maintenance, and uses of their grass clippings. The amount of surface area that is mulched, transported away and turned into feed [beweidet] is charted along with the cutting regimin. Conclusions drawn from the questionairre are to be found in the continuation in the next issue of RASEN. |
