Abstract/Contents:Identifies factors which influence golf course firmness such as soil type, irrigation program, and thatch accumulation. Defines thatch as "a combination of living and dead plant material" which can be beneficial to an extent in terms of traffic control, but excessive thatch can lead to soft conditions, poor root development, and greater disease susceptibility. Recommends core aeration, vertical mowing, and sand topdressing for thatch removal, suggesting that "fairway topdressing programs are most beneficial when they are used in a fashion similar to putting green topdressing programs, through light and frequent applications to uniformly dilute thatch accumulation." Concludes that "golf courses that have been successful at producing firm, healthy fairways are the ones that have committed to these programs."
