Abstract/Contents: | When vegetative tillers of P. pratense, cv. Prato, were treated with ethephon at 4800 mg/litre some showed an abnormal differentiation into 2 distinct parts: a short, comparatively thick base with a tiller sprouting at its top, and an upper elongated and this portion. The anatomy of the vascular bundles was compared in treated and control plants and it appeared that the basal portion was in fact part of the node (which normally does not elongate) and only the portion above the tiller comprised the internode. Nodes did not respond to exogenous GA3 at 1000 mg/litre, which stimulated internode growth considerably. However, simultaneous application of ethephon and GA3 resulted in the development of much larger nodes than did ethephon alone. |
