Abstract/Contents:The biology and symptoms of turf infection are described for Crinipellis oreades formerly Maramius oreades, the cause of fairy rings. In fungicide trials, formalin drenching of the soil gave disappointing results; it was costly and ineffective unless it penetrated to a depth of 0.20-0.25 m. Dolomitic marl at 13,500 kg/ha with or without digging and/or subsurface treatment was applied in 2 years' trials on an infected group of pitches at Hardenberg. The soil was acid and a podsol; its chemical and physical properties are tabulated. In the first year treatments comprising digging or a combination of dolomitic marl surface liming + subsurface liming + digging were associated with a slight reduction in fairy ring incidence. Treatments the next year compared marl incorporation with incorporation + subsurface application and digging. Dug plots showed no infection following digging, whereas neither of the liming treatments was very effective. Advice is given on preventive and curative treatments for sports pitches.
