Abstract/Contents:Describes a project in which the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) assisted Stowe School with its planning application "to relocate the school's nine hole golf facility to an alternative location within its historic parkland setting." States that "relocating the golf course was seen as an opportunity to facilitate access and create a new golf facility that was safer for golfers as well as resulting in a significant landscape gain." Details how STRI's Ecology and Golf Architecture teams worked to preserve both historically significant structures and native vegetation and wildlife throughout the reconstruction. Overviews how the STRI team was able to plan and build around the community's ancient Farey Oak tree, without compromising the tree's root structure or microclimate. Concludes that "the approach by the team at Stowe was to gather as much information as possible up front from all relevant field experts in order to allow the planning authority to be fully armed with the facts."
